We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of maneuvering around toys placed on the floor, or furniture legs that are sticking out from under things. It also has a camera sensor that snaps the Roomba back to the real world when it starts to drift from its actual location.

iRobot has also included the option of rolling rollers under the Roomba that do not have bristles, and therefore are more likely to resist knots than earlier models. They're also taller than previous rollers, and will fit better under beds and couches that are low, and they're designed to let this model move more easily across a variety of flooring types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models with a higher-end price tag however, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature that utilizes a camera to spot bits of embedded dirt. This is a significant improvement over the previous model that relied on the use of a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover to bounce around the room and scrub the entire area three times at various angles.

In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. It did a great job picking up pet hair but had a difficult time with the thick and long pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and it's not even nearly as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models in this list. The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready to use immediately. It will return to its dock when it is running out of batteries or is full of debris.
