The relationship between Avon and Vila is the central theme of the book and they clearly have a common respect for each other, but they have a strong dislike of their cowardice and ruthlessness.

There are some genuinely gripping scenes, as Avon is required to make difficult decisions to safeguard his team, and this reveals his more gentle side. The characters have plenty of depth, and each one has a unique persona that makes them relatable. This is a story you'll want to read more of. The writing is flawless, and the story has a genuine sense of the place. It's a masterpiece written by an author at the top of her ability.
