The earcups come with touch controls that are simple and responsive. Swipe up or down to alter the volume. You can also swipe forward to listen to the next song or reverse to hear the previous track. The headphones can be connected to two devices simultaneously and will automatically stop playback when you take them off your head, thanks to the built-in sensor. You can also activate ambient mode by resting your palm on the right ear cup, which allows you to hear what's going on around you without taking off the headphones.

Other useful features include the ability to pair them with your voice assistant, Bluetooth low-energy, and support for high-resolution audio (via LDAC). They come with a durable carrying case made from high-end fabric as well as an USB-C cable for charging. The headphones are compatible with most Android and iOS smartphones and computers running Windows and macOS. The WH-1000XM5's battery capacity is superb. In our battery test we recorded 31 hours and 53 minute with the ANC on which was more than Sony's advertised 30 hour battery life.

The WH-1000XM5's microphone performance on voice calls is excellent and there's no distorted or static-y sounding background. Noise cancellation is also great, and these headphones are great for public transportation and the office.

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2

The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 provides a significant improvement over its predecessor. It features a range of new features and performance. It features wireless streaming with 24-bit and optimized active noise cancellation, and crystal clear voice quality on any compatible tablet or mobile phone. Its custom-designed 40mm drivers are carefully placed inside each earcup for a more focused, deep listening experience. Six strategically placed microphones provide exceptional call clarity even in noisy environments. And an inline remote and microphone let you control your music and calls on any device compatible with it.

Similar to the original PX7, these headphones are a sleekly refined look with accent rings around each earcup as well as an elegant silver sheen on the headband. The memory foam earcups fit comfortably, but not too tightly on the cranium. The new design and shape was developed over the course of several months and provides an incredibly comfortable clamping pressure that isn't into my skull.

They're 2 ounces lighter (or 307g) and are a little smaller than the Sony WH1000XM5. The headphones are light enough to be carried in a bag or backpack and remain in place during long listening sessions. A sturdy hinge on the back of the headband enables you to fold them to make it easy to transport them in the protective case.

The headphones are powered by Bluetooth 5.2 and aptX Adaptive. This is ideal for high-resolution audio aswell for a tight video sync. You can also play the headphones wired, too, with the included 3.5mm cable that connects to a USB-C port on the right earcup. The headphone's status indicator is an excellent feature, flashing green to indicate rapid charge and solid blue when Bluetooth pairing is in progress.

The B&W app offers the same controls as the onboard buttons in the hardware - bass and treble adjustment and assigning action buttons, wear detection, cycle through ANC modes and more. When you play music on your iPhone, the app displays album covers and track titles. However, some popular features such as music presets or a soundscapes feature are missing.

Sennheiser HD 800 S

The HD 800 S is a successor to the legendary Sennheiser headphones and is made to meet the highest expectations. The technical design was designed to give stunning detail resolution that encompasses the entire frequency spectrum, dynamic range and stereo panorama. It's the most realistic spatial audio you'll experience on open-back headphones.

The headphone has an impedance of 300 ohms so it requires a high-quality headphone amplifier that can drive it at the desired levels without distortion. A balanced connection is recommended, since this can double the output power and improve the overall sound quality.

The headphones are designed for professional use and feature a sturdy metal frame that is adorned with leather and plastic. The design is minimalist and doesn't appear like the most expensive pair of headphones, but they feel premium in the hand and are well-built. They come with a carry case, an additional audio cable, and a 1/4" to 1-/8" adapter.

The HD 800 S has a neutral sound that reproduces vocals and instruments with naturality, however they are less bass-y. This is because the open-back design creates a spacious and out-of-head, passive soundstage. The treble sound quality is superb with only minor headphones for Ipad dips and peaks. The Treble region also has a linearity and you won't be able to deal with piercingsibilants or even the upper bite of a drum snare.

They can still provide impact as well as dynamism and impact when needed despite the lack of a powerful low-end. They'll still be a great choice for those who like listening to rock music that has powerful basslines, but they may not sound as enjoyable as some of the competing models on this list such as the HiFiMan Arya.
