After a string of social media posts that hinted at it, Italian supercar maker Lamborghini finally announced its NFT (non fungible token) Project. Dubbed Space Key and developed in collaboration with an undisclosed artist and built on a piece of advanced carbon fiber composite material that was shipped to the International Space Station for research purposes.

The latest project - dubbed the Space Key - is a work of art that was that was created in collaboration with an unknown artist. The NFT is a unique piece of digital art that can be accessed through a QR code. The project is limited to five pieces and will be auctioned in the coming weeks.

The Space Key is made of carbon composite materials that Lamborghini as part of a research project in the year 2019, sent to the International Space Station. The Space Key is a collection of five physical objects that allows you to access an exclusive digital work by the yet to be identified artist. The "collectors' piece" was created in collaboration with NFTPRO(tm) and is limited to only five units. It is scheduled to be auctioned in the near future.

Each of the five Space Keys will feature a distinct moment that happens seconds apart as the Lamborghini Ultimae lifts off toward the stars. More than 600 million pixels make up each of the five images which were captured by photographer Fabian Oefner.

Oefner used a balloon with a camera to capture each of the individual shots, which were later merged into the final image. The result is a photo that is completely out of the world. It captures both the beauty of Earth and the futuristic, hyperrealistic view of a car rising from the Earth. The Space Keys will be auctioned off in the near future, but the exact date and location of the event haven't been revealed yet.

The auction

The auctions, which will begin between February 1 until February 4, last for 75 hours and 50 minutes - the same amount of time it took Apollo 11 to leave Earth and enter lunar orbit. The five NFTs can be purchased by making an online registration. Each NFT will be sold separately and the winner will be awarded a digital artwork by renowned photographer Fabian Oefner that captures five different moments the Space Key experienced during its journey through space.
